A good balance of physics and application

We use this book as a first year graduate level quantum class in the materials department. It has a nice balance of theory and application, but you still feel like you have a solid mathematical understanding of the concepts. The language is clear and not bulky, and Kroemer really tries to give you an intuition of the physics in addition to the math. The exercises are often rewarding to do since they are not too math-y but they get the concept across well and you feel like you've discovered something. The downside is sometimes this intuition is not entirely clear and you get lost in what Kroemer thinks is intuitive (he is a Nobel winner, so I'd imagine there are quite a few things more intuitive to him than to most people). Also, there are quite a few errors in the text, so be sure you have the errata handy with you (some of the errata are actually quite significant, like negative signs or rewrites of entire sections).
Overall, this book ties in the math and concepts nicely and connects the theory and application. It's very rewarding to learn from this book. The classic text from Griffiths complements this book well. I'd also recommend hardback; the paperback binding tends to fall apart. There are many paperback texts floating around the office where chunks of the book just come apart....

Very Good QM text

It is one of the finest books you will see on QM and if you are from the electrical engineering stream with semiconductor physics as your major,no text perhaps shall serve you better.The striking aspect of the book is the physical insight it gives into highly abstract theories of QM and the illustration of that theory with a relevant example from the engineering/physical world. Mathematical results we take for granted just as another interplay of the numbers are attributed to some very definite law of nature,for eg the unobservability of absolute frequencies in the probability density function of linearly superposed states is a case in point.Rather than leaving the mathematical expression as a difference of two frequencies he goes onto explain it and also draws an analogy between Electromagnetic waves and the point where the classical limit and the analogy breaks down.This is just one example out of the many scattered throughout the text.Any one with a working knowledge of QM and some introduction to semiconductor physics will immensely benefit from it, though physicists alike, I think can draw much information from the material presented.I hope this book has greater circulation.No wonder the author was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his seminal work on semiconductor heterostructures.

Awesome book!

Prof Kroemer's book is just awesome. It doesnt go into too much mathematics, which is not usually the case for most QM books. It is written specifically for people who want to get a kind of intuitive feel for QM i.e. engineers. The book is very clear about its purpose. The chapters follow up each other in a very logical manner, and the text is precise and to the point. I had a great time learning from this book in my grad course.
