Exciting reading with a core of solid values

"The Monkey King's Daughter: The Many Adventures of Meilin #2" is the second action-adventure novel for 8-13 year old readers about a teenage girl whose mystical origin leads her to myriad adventures in both ancient mythical China the present-day USA. Meilin is the plucky heroine who must fight to overcome or right an ancient act of betrayal in her distant past, learning to find and use her secret powers and identity, all while leading a normal high school life complete with distractingly handsome boys. Meilin fights an unknown evil foe and makes a dangerous choice that may determine the rise or fall of the Demon Monkey Kingdom. "The Monkey King's Daughter" is excellent reading for young people and reinforces ideas of loyalty, honoring cultural authenticity, respectful development and use of special talents, and the virtue of planing ahead (for all events). "The Monkey King's Daughter" is exciting reading with a core of solid values.

About the Author

John A. Van de Walle

The late John Van de Walle was a professor emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a mathematics education consultant who regularly gave professional development workshops for K-8 teachers in the United States and Canada. He visited and taught in elementary school classrooms and worked with teachers to implement student-centered math lessons. He co-authored the Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics K-6 series and contributed to the Pearson School mathematics program, enVisionMATH. Additionally, he wrote numerous chapters and articles for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) books and journals and was very active in NCTM, including serving on the Board of Directors, Chair of the Educational Materials Committee, and a frequent speaker at national and regional meetings.

 

Jennifer M. Bay Williams

Jennifer Bay-Williams is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky). Jennifer has published many articles on teaching and learning in NCTM journals. She has also coauthored numerous books, including: Mathematics Coaching: Tools and Resources for Coaches and Leaders, K-12; Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2, Math and Literature: Grades 6-8, Math and Nonfiction: Grades 6-8, and Navigating through Connections in Grades 6-8. Jennifer taught elementary, middle, and high school in Missouri and in Peru, and continues to work in classrooms at all levels with students and with teachers. Jennifer served as member of Board of Directors for TODOS: Equity for All, as president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), and editor for the 2012 NCTM Yearbook.

 

LouAnn Lovin

LouAnn Lovin is a professor of mathematics education at James Madison University (Virginia). She co-authored the First Edition of the Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics Professional Development Series with John A. VandeWalle as well as Teaching Mathematics Meaningfully: Solutions for Reaching Struggling Learners with special educators David Allsopp and Maggie Kyger. LouAnn taught mathematics to middle and high school students before transitioning to PreK-8. Over the last 15 years, she has worked in K-8 classrooms and engaged with teachers in professional development as they implement a student-centered approach to teaching mathematics. She has published articles in NCTM’s Teaching Children Mathematics and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School and has served on NCTM’s Educational Materials Committee.LouAnn’s research interest is on ways to develop teachers’ mathematical knowledge needed to teach for understanding.

 

Karen Karp

Karen S. Karpis a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky).  Prior to entering the field of teacher education she was an elementary school teacher in New York.  Karen’s research interests is on teaching mathematics to diverse populations. She is also co-author of Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Teaching Developmentally, Growing Professionally: Readings from NCTM Publications for Grades K-8,  Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2 and numerous book chapters and articles. She is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and a former president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE).  She continues to work in classrooms to support teachers of students with disabilities in their mathematics instruction.

Although I've taught a variety of subjects in the 10 years I've been a teacher, his past year was my first time teaching 8th grade math. Although I took and passed (advanced) a released end-of-year standardized test, I didn't necessarily know HOW to teach the concepts. If you find yourself (like me) teaching math in middle school, this is a MUST-HAVE resource. The section on fractions alone is worth it,* but there are TONS of great insights to help you get students to focus on their own understanding of concepts.

The book is broken into 2 main sections: (1) establishing a student-centered environment, and (2) the actual teaching of student-centered math. Each chapter is FULL of activities to do with students to build understanding of particular concepts within a unit. You'll have to make/lead the activities yourself, but the ideas and intentions are there. Websites, downloadable black-line masters, illustrations of concepts via examples in the margins, etc.

TEACHER TIP: I bought "Sharpie Accent Tank-Style Highlighters, 6 Colored Highlighters (25076)" to use with this. I don't typically do colorful and artsy, but I ended up going full-blown nerd on this book (see pics). I'm really glad I bought the 6-color pack because each color ending up having a specific purpose:

- blue = websites & other technology-based resources (including black-line masters)
- orange = activities to do with students (there are DOZENS to do)
- green = specific teaching strategies ("ask this question," direct thinking in this way, etc.)
- neon yellow = general information
- gold/regular yellow = Common Core alignment
- pink = misconceptions, SPED, and ELL/ESL

The only thing I don't like about it is that they don't include even an outlined electronic copy of what you would do with each activity from the chapters. This allows great flexibility, sure, but you still have to come up with everything.

Still, Pearson did a really great job with this resource. I wish they offered a hard-cover version because I'll likely wear mine out.

* Success with fractions is indicative of success in Algebra 1 (page 106), and passing Algebra 1 is indicative of high school graduation (it's a requirement here in VA). So helping students with fractions helps them graduate in the long run. As I was reading the fractions section, I had this desire well up within me to teach 6th grade to prepare students for their coming years of middle-school instruction (by they time I got them in 8th grade, they're on their way out). Your students deserve the best instruction you can provide, and this book will definitely help you to do that.

If you're a parent, then this will help you to understand how to assist your child with particular concepts, and the activities can be done at home.

The go-to book for everything Common Core!

I teach Math 7 and Math 7 Accelerated, and this book has been the best resource for the transition to the Common Core standards. The book includes suggestions for creating a Common Core friendly classroom and has hundreds of activities that align with each strand of the standards. I regularly use activities from this book because they get students thinking and talking about the material with a teacher's guidance. They are able to form their own connections and understanding with the material, and that is so much more valuable and engaging than having them robotically copy notes from the board. More often than not, students thank me for such fun, thought-provoking lessons and activities, and I thank this book for helping me grow as a teacher in the new era of the Common Core.

I am rating this 5 stars because the teachers in my school (I am an elementary school principal) found this book extremely helpful in implementing common core math. I have top notch teachers who all were very excited to use this book. It is theoretically strong and has many practical applications within.

About the Author
Helen Oyakawa was born and raised in Hawaii. She and her family lived in Chicago, Iowa, and back again in Hawaii before moving to Montebello, California. She and her husband are both retired, she as a teacher, and he as a retired minister. They have four adult children, and three granddaughters. This is her first book.

A Japanese Family in Oklahoma

I am amazed by the talent loose in the Oyakawa family. A few weeks ago, I read Michio Oyakawa's CANARY POND; and now, his wife Helen's book HOME about growing up in Oklahoma during and after World War II is another strong showing.

The story is told from one of the younger sons, Ted Sato, as he describes the difficulties of living as a tenant farmer in the middle of the Dust Bowl at a time when many locals were prejudiced against the Japanese because of the War. By agreeing to move to Oklahoma, they were able to escape having to stay in a relocation camp like Manzanar; but their lot was just as difficult, being so far from their family base.

When the father receives word that his own parents are dying in Japan (after the War), he travels to see them, despite the fact that he is not feeling very good himself. Once there, he dies before his parents do; and the news devastates his family back on the farm.

But as a result of the strength of their family ties and the resourcefulness of the children, they manage to eke out a living and even, at the end, plan a return to California. HOME is an excellent Young Adult novel with its emphasis of family and multi-culturalism. I strongly recommend both of the Oyakawa novels as good reads.

A Must-Read!

Many of us who were born after World War II didn't know about the experiences of Japanese-Americans during that period of our history. I didn't even hear about the internment camps until I was in college. Home really opened my eyes and will open the eyes of anyone who wants to know more about that sad time.

The reader learns about the tribulations through the eyes of a young boy, Teddy Sato, whose family decides to become sharecroppers in Oklahoma rather than go to an internment camp in their own state of California. Life turns out to be far more difficult, though, despite their apparent "freedom."

Based on the experience of a real family, Home is a fabulous read for ages eight through adult. I couldn't put it down. In addition, I highly recommend this book for teachers who are doing units on World War II. It is an informative and refreshing change from battle names and dates; it gives the reader insight into the lives--the thoughts, fears, and dreams--of people who suffered just because of their ethnic heritage.

Triumph over adversity

This story of a Japanese family caught in a dilemma between imprisonment and sharecropping is a masterful depiction of the day-to-day concerns of a large family, handling the repercussions of an extraneous political situation with dignity. Tenderness, feelings of concern for each other, loyalty, cooperation, ethnic pride and resourcefulness are deftly exhibited through the interaction of family members. This novel, based on real life, represents a beautiful example of family unity, recognition of individual responsibility within the clan, and the struggles to earn an honest living in an alien environment, facing adverse circumstances with courage, hard work and determination to succeed.
