A sometimes interesting book on the philosophical aspects of practicing Tai Chi.

My lifetime passion for anything to do with the martial arts and self-defense has also led me to study Tai Chi long enough to earn my instructor's certificate many years ago. In fact, I still teach a seated version of Tai Chi I developed for seniors who have trouble doing standing exercises. I teach this class twice a week. I have read numerous books over the years on the topic of Tai Chi and its true meaning. However, even though this volume (Embrace tiger, Return to the mountain: The Essence of Tai Ji) was sometimes interesting, I did not find it an enjoyable read. In fact, it was many times boring and I struggled to finish it because I NEVER write a review without reading the entire book. The text does attempt to explore various philosophical issues such as Zen, Taioism and other spiritural and mystical topics relating it to the practice of Tai Chi (or Tai Ji as the author spells it).

This 188 page book is organized into nine chapters. It also has a foreword and an introduction page. The first five chapters cover the various mystical aspects of practicing Tai Chi. It includes numerous Asian philosophical topics like Zen, Taioism and other spiritural topics. The 6th chapter provides a short overview of calligraphy, which I found interesing. The 7th chapter explores the meaning of the Zen Ox Pictures. The 8th chapter explains Tao Te Ching. The final chapter the author relates some of his experiences and stories. The remander of the book has various black and white pictures of the author with other people.

In conclusion, for those who are really into the philosophical aspects of Tai Chi, you may find this book of some interest and even gain some insight that you did not know previously. I can only give this book a fair rating at best.

Very good book but not for beginners

I am only beginning to explore the essence of Tai Ji and this book caught my interest because of its title. Also, other reviewers indicated that the book is worth reading. In my opinion, the book is not for the beginners. One should be familiar with the basic principles of Tai Ji in order to follow it and understand the form of Tai Ji the author is teaching. This book does not disect the teaching in an attempt to explain it. It is an experience that comes from knowledge. I will definitely keep and it return to it when I have studied the philosophy and am prepared to experience it.
