From Despair to Hope

In this memoir, Maya Hope Kitwana exposes the reader to a world many have not experienced and were probably unaware even existed. For thirty years Maya carried around secrets of childhood and adolescent secrets no person should have to endure. Ms Kitwana’s journey from secrecy to forgiveness to love makes compelling reading.
Ms Kitwana’s purpose for writing this story was, first of all, to free herself from the past and if in doing so, one other person is helped, encouraged and cheered on, so much the better.
This book does not carry with it the hallmarks of great writing. At times the story time-line can be confusing and the writing does not always flow smoothly, but this only serves to accentuates the raw emotions of the story. One does not think clearly when forced into situations beyond one’s control.
This is a disturbing read and not for the faint of heart. But for those who have found themselves in similar situations, it is a beacon of hope.

About the Author
Matthew Desmond is an assistant professor of sociology and social studies at Harvard University. He is the author of Evicted (forthcoming from Crown publishing), On the Fireline: Living and Dying with Wildland Firefighters (2007), and The Racial Order (co-authored with Mustafa Emirbayer, 2015).

Mustafa Emirbayer is professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. A past chair of the ASA Theory Section and winner of the Lewis Coser Award for Theoretical Agenda-Setting in Sociology, Emirbayer’s research includes historical studies on the teaching of morality and citizenship in American public schools and theoretical studies on race, social networks, culture, agency, collective emotions, the public sphere and civil society, revolutions and social movements, organizations, and democracy. He is the co-author (with Matthew Desmond) of The Racial Order (2015).

A nice short story...

I've read many of Diana Palmer's book and well this one was not very different. Since its more like a short story, it doesn't get that well developed.

Story is about a mom (Maggie) who moves out to Montana with her son. The nearest neighbor (Tate) is almost untouchable after he lost his family. However, Maggie is able to win his heart and build her own family with Tate.

Since the story is very short, the character's personalities don't have a chance to develop. However, you can see from the short amount of time that Maggie is very devoted towards her son and Tate is very passionate and somewhat innocent.

A cute story. If you like Diana Palmer, this one should be a quick, good read.

i have read literally all of her books and thoroughly enjoy them. she always writes about the same theme, young virgin, older man, hates them, but eventually they realize they love them so all is right. her love scenes are so tender that you can help but fall in love. i cannot wait for her next book.

The question Amazon asked when they wanted me to rate this book was, "Did this item meet your expectations?"....the answer is, ABSOLUTELY "YES" ! ! ! ! ! I began reading books by this author several years ago and have many of them in my personal collection...one day I hope to own them all....I am never disappointed in the story lines nor content of her books....and the fact that so many of them have the same characters in them just makes it better for me....it is just like reading a family history and I do so love to do that !!!!

About the Author

Sun-Ah Jun is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She received her Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in 1993 and has been teaching at UCLA since. She also taught at the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) Summer Institute in 2001 and the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT) Summer School in 2013. Her research focuses on intonational phonology, prosodic typology, the interface between prosody and the various subareas of linguistics, and language acquisition. Her publications include The Phonetics and Phonology of Korean Prosody: Intonational Phonology and Prosodic Structure (Garland Publishing, Inc., 1996) and she is the editor of the first volume of Prosodic Typology (OUP, 2005).

Now that Bill Watterson has retired from drawing syndicated cartoons, the only way to get our Calvin and Hobbes fixes is through his book collections. The 10th Anniversary Book is particularly notable, because in addition to getting some of his most wonderful cartoons, we also gain a sense of Watterson as a person.

Approximately one-tenth of the book contains essays about matters great and small--from cartooning to life--and stories about the inspiration behind some of his greatest strips. Not surprisingly, Watterson shines through as a being of considerable integrity, and the cartoons gain in depth thanks to his commentary. And, of course, the cartoons in the other 90% of the book are alternately side-splitting hilarious or touching. Happy Anniversary, Bill, and good luck with whatever it is you are doing now!

Review
No one has captured children's world view and sense of imagination in cartoon strip form as well as Watterson. Nor applied it so strikingly to comment on adult life and attitudes or the general absurdity of the world in which we live... Much will strike a chord and raise a knowing smile at their perception, but above all, they are very, very funny. MIDWEEK

A fine compliment to the C&H enthusiast's collection

Watterson hand-picked each Sunday strip in this book and provided a 3-5 line commentary on most of the strips. The chosen strips are split about halfway between the old format and the later, "non-bordered" format, and the selected Sunday strips are certainly representative of C&H's style and character.
Some of the commentary is very similar to what's found in the 10th anniv. book, but most of it is newly informative and interesting. As an aspiring comic-stripper, I found Watterson's comments very useful in bettering my approach to the design, coloring and plot of a comic strip, more so than what he says in the 10th anniv. book.
The collection begins with an essay from Mr. Watterson about his perspective on C&H 6 years removed, and it's probably my favorite part of the book. Also included are the non-colored sketches of each strip on its neighboring page. Since these sketches are reprinted in color, you can see the erasures, griddings and white-outs; a nice touch, for sure.
Comic strip enthusiasts are going to grab this book no matter what I say (and well they should), but more casual readers may be happier reading this book at the bookstore for free instead. It's short and contains comics already printed in the many C&H collections, but it's certainly suited for the C&H fan who wants more. I think it's very kind of Mr. Watterson, a man who never wanted the fame C&H garnered him, to offer his time and comments for this collection. As a lover of the comic arts, I genuinely thank him for helping make this book happen.

A great comic by one of the best!

There is nothing to dislike about Calvin and Hobbes! My six year old has learned to read better because of all of Calvin's adventures and imaginings (if that's a word). It's been great to see him grab hold of a book and work through some of Calvin's large vocabulary. Granted, some of the more mature expressions that Calvin talks about are well above most six year old heads and I was questioned several times about what Calvin meant in a few of the comics. But as far as reading material, Bill Watterson is one of the best comic creators ever.

The book itself is quality and well worth the price. My son gives most books a good workout and this one holds together quite well. The binding is solid and the paperback cover has held up very well.

Great for artists and a must for the hardcore fan

I own every C&H book and treasury and, succumbing to sloth, I copied the same review 12 times on Amazon to avoid writing 12 different reviews. I am not doing that for this one because fans should know that this book is a bit different. It came to be as a result of an exhibition Waterson did in Ohio and has more of an artsy feel. It also has brief commentary by the cartoonist at the bottom of each page along with each set of Sunday panels. The format is a double print of each Sunday page. On the left-hand page you see it in black and white sketch version and on the right-hand page the final version in color. The left-hand side has eraser-marks and white out and other details you dont see in the finished color version. Personally, I love it and I am not really an artist at all. The quality of the book adds greatly to the appeal with nice super high-quality paper and amazing detail and crisp printing technique. The pages are not like most C&H books, with a matte finish. These are glossy and slick with great details. When my copy arrived I almost thought I had accidentally been sent a presentation copy or something, but all the ones I have seen are like mine; they just did a great job with the printing and formatting. Now I wish all my C&H books came with this kind of detail and sharp images, but you can't have everyting, and C&H is not so much about glossy images anyway. Having said that, I feel that this book allows the reader to see and appreciate the beauty in many of Watterson's Sunday pages. The black and whites also show a lot of detail you won't get in other C&H books. Of course, you also get a bunch of really good cartoons, as usual, but there are only half as many, since every one takes up two full pages with the two versions. To sum up, the material is old, the commentary is new and the quality is great. Get the other C&H books first, but then consider this one to spice up your collection with something a bit different.

This revision of the classic text on railroad engineering-considered the "bible" of the field for three decades-is the culmination of the author's 48 years of experience in railroad engineering, teaching, research, and consultation. It provides an upto-date, ready reference to the principles and applications of railroad design, construction, operation, and maintenance for engineers, supervisors, designers, managers, planners, and field personnel. Railroad Engineering, Second Edition examines the causes of both rapid transit and conventional railroad problems, and shows how current construction and maintenance procedures are used to solve these problems.

The first fourteen chapters of the book set forth basic principles of route location and focus on the relation between locomotive characteristics and performance, and the location factors of distance, curvature, rise and fall, and major grades. The cost effects of these various relationships are stressed, and details of train, curve and grade resistance, locomotive horsepower, tractive effort, performance, speed and speed control are emphasized.

Chapters fifteen through thirty describe and apply principles that govern the design, construction, and use of railroad track. They treat track analysis, support systems, components, geometry and the conduct of work in construction and maintenance.

About the Author
About the author William W. Hay is Professor Emeritus of Railway Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois and is a domestic and foreign railroad consultant. Prior to his academic career, he spent 16 years in the engineering and maintenance departments of several major railroads and the military railway service. Dr. Hay is author of Introduction to Transportation Engineering, Second Edition (Wiley 1977) He is an honorary member of the American Railway Engineering Associations, and served as Director of both the Roadmasters and Maintenance of Way Associations of America. He received his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Illinois.

A good introduction with antiquated economics

RAILROAD ENGINEERING is somewhat pricey for a simple update of a book originally published in the early 1950's. A good introduction to the engineering aspects of railroading but with grossly obsolete economics and operating concepts. This critic, a onetime trackman on the Erie Lackawanna (Local 1502 MOW Employees) and now licensed professional engineer, found the author's suggestion to hire vagrants as gandy dancers somewhat amusing. At half the price, this book would be a worthwhile addition to a railfan's library or to a beginning engineering student's book bag.
