Extremely Insightful

LOVING IT! Right from the first chapter I learned something about MYSELF! Shocked at how easy to understand this teaching is. Starting with discovering my beliefs about imagination! Couldn't believe how negative I've been all my life. Can't recommend this book enough. If you are struggling with the frustration of why you can't seem to achieve any progress in whatever creative process you are trying READ this book! You won't regret it.

Lots of knowledge, but almost too much

I would recommend it for an art therapy class or if you're definitely interested in techniques related to art therapy, but maybe not so much if you just want something to casually pick up and read. There are a lot of personal references the author makes so it's not so much of a textbook, but she also goes into detail about different ideas for art-making, which I didn't particularly like. Following the universal need to create art for the souls expression

This is an excellent book looking at art therapy and expressive arts facilitation. The book starts out by providing an overview of how to work with different art materials and provides prompts and exercises to increase your comfort level with using art for expressive purposes. The book then looks at the writers personal journey to follow the need to create art for expression that is deeply rooted in all of us- but something we tend to loose as we "grow up" and start censoring everything creative. I completed EA training at Salve Regina University and this book was recommended reading and I would also strongly recommend it.

Please don’t give up, Mr. Hanley

This book by Saskatchewan writer Paul Hanley is about the consequences of the increasing global population of humans—predicted to reach 11 billion this century. The consequences seem, of course, catastrophic to the reader who values democratic institutions and general freedoms of speech and choice as well as freedoms from hunger and violence.

The book to me explains much of the daily news. For example, Gaza, Kuwait, Qatar, Yemen, and about a dozen sub-Saharan countries are all in the 3%-increase-per-year club. The African countries especially are important contributors to the flood of migrants trying to get into European democratic countries with social assistance, health care, and education—and also opportunities to initiate profitable criminal enterprises. Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other countries with the same religious culture don't quite make the 3% list but are also big contributors. What explains the migrants’ wish to leave their culture, and do they foresee establishing the same culture throughout Europe?

Climate change including the unprecedented forest fires of 2015 in northern Saskatchewan are manifestations of a global commitment to consumerism and waste that has for a few decades now led to exponential annual increases in carbon dioxide. Sooner or later, exponential doesn’t compute. But it seems that a majority of the billions of people of Earth seek unlimited access to material wealth with little thought about carbon dioxide or any other consequences of their cultures. Only a few have essentially unlimited material wealth already, but most of the rest want as much as possible.

The book offers reasoning and planning for those with sufficient personal strength to try to do something about population growth. Needed are political leaders who will read the book and assume the role. Otherwise, in my opinion, at some point it will take a modern Charles Martel and a large number of fatalities to save the planet from descent into a new and possibly final Dark Age.

I wish the author would be interviewed in the media. I wish the book were adopted into university reading lists. Please don’t give up, Mr. Hanley.

Next, excerpts from Lynch's travel journals reveal his early ideas on how people perceive and interpret their surroundings, ideas that culminated in his seminal work "The Image of the City. This part of the book also presents Lynch's experiments with children and his assessment of environmental-perception research. The examples of both smallscale and large-scale analysis of visual form in part III are followed by three parts on city design. These include Lynch's more theoretical works on complexplanning decisions involving both functional (spatial and structural organization) and normative (how the city works in human terms) approaches, articles discussing the principles that guided Lynchs teaching and practice of city design, and descriptions of Lynch's own projects in the Boston area and elsewhere. The book concludes with essays written late in Lynch's career, fantasy pieces on utopias and offering new design freedoms and scenarios warning of horrifying "cacotopias" to come. Kevin Lynch (1918-1984) studied with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin and later obtained a Bachelor of City Planning degree from MIT. After a long and distinguished career on the faculty of the MIT School of Architecture and Urban Planning, he was named Professor Emeritus of City Planning. Tridib Banerjee is Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Southern California. Michael Southworth is a Professor of Urban Design and Environmental Planning at the University of California at Berkeley.

Transnational thoughts from a human geographer & Latino Veteran of U.S. Army

Lynch (1918-1984), was born in Chicago, IL, raised in NC, and later educated under the tutorage of Frank Lloyd Wright, before leaving to serve overseas with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in the Pacific/Southeast Asian Region during World War II (WWII) and returned home to complete undergraduate studies at MIT, served as an urban planner (working in Greensboro, NC), then was asked to return to MIT as a professor. Thus, his work was instrumental in transforming some of the greatest scientific minds when universities in the U.S. accepted professors without doctoral degrees. With this in mind, some of our universities are failing students because they insist on ignoring the experiential knowledge of veterans that served overseas and gained insight into both the destruction of landscapes and reconstruction of urban centers which suffered from catastrophic situations. Working in Latin America and the Pacific-Asian Region of the world in the second half of the twentieth century, Lynch provided both applied and theoretical designs which exist in this book and I recommend it for those interested in geography, landscape architecture, regional planning, and urban development.

Lynch's researches and projects brilliantly organized

Michael Southworth and Tridib Banerjee, former students of Kevin Lynch at MIT's School of Urban Studies and Planning, have organized a brilliant collection of most of Lynch's works. Here we can find his seminal ideas pointed out trough his researches in the field of environmental perception, as well as his urban design projects. The book still presents a good biography of Lynch and serves as a very interesting complement to the books that this fundamental author wrote. It is an extremely important work both to architectural and urban design students as well as to professionals and researches.

This is THE BOOK for anyone -not exclusively urban planners- who wants to understand not only the physical form of the city, but how its citizens interact with the urban landscape. Through his experience and observation, Lynch reminds us that the most important component of a city -the reason why they are built- are its inhabitants.
