This magnificent volume reproduces all of Hopper's 357 watercolor paintings . They were first published in the four-volume catalogue raisonn� of the artist's works. Now they are offered at a price that will make them attractive to anyone seriously interested in art. Hopper was comfortable in both oil and watercolor, although his technique with each medium varied considerably. While oils were done in the studio, often from detailed sketches with notations on colors, the watercolors were painted on location and seem far more spontaneous. In the years since Hopper's death in 1967, many of his paintings have achieved iconographic status as statements about this country. His empty cityscapes and countrysides speak of our sense of loneliness and alienation, while his fascination with the light on Cape Cod and the buildings in Gloucester result in the evocation of feelings that can only be described as uniquely American. 357 color plates

There's nothing like seeing them all together

This would be a 5 star book if the reproductions were just a bit larger, but it's a small complaint. If you like Hopper you will enjoy discovering works you've never seen before. If you're a painter too, you'll like the format: 1 page of introductory text and nothing but reproductions after that! Lots of people are familiar with Hopper's quote "All I ever wanted to paint was sunlight on the side of a house." This is the book that makes you understand what he meant: his mostly on-sight watercolors have a sun drenched quality that his oils didn't catch as often, good as they are. Hard to imagine anyone being disappointed by this book.

Outstanding

Levin has split her Catalogue Raisonne of Hopper's work into two books with this one containing all the watercolors. I must disagree with other reviewers here regarding their complaints about the size of the images. In my opinion, it's unrealistic to make the images larger without changing the size/format of the book - which matches the companion of Hopper's oil paintings. Besides, this is a complete catalog of all his watercolors and I think it works very well. Don't assume that the images are "tiny"; they fit the pages and hence, I won't downgrade my assessment to match theirs.

Levin has done an outstanding job and I think all Hopper fans will appreciate this book. Highly recommended.

A feast for Hopper watercolor lovers!

It is exactly what it claims: a"catalog" of all Hopper watercolors, with short notes about each work from the artists' notebook. I appreciate the compact, easy to handle size, and the clean design, yet wish for larger reproductions.(Which explains the 4-star rating.) I was delighted to see many watercolors for the first time. If you are disapointed by the lack of text, get Virginia Mecklenburgs' book on Hopper watercolors...it's as "easy" and wonderful to read as this book is to look at. I look forward to owning the companion, The Complete Paintings of Edward Hopper.

I bought this because I am thinking on building my own new family home and like the modernism and on-site cleanliness that comes from prefab construction methods. I wanted to see what can be done and where there might be some design considerations I had not...er...considered! This book was very helpful, but it would be better if it gave information on costs and suppliers.

In finely wrought chapters that at times read more like a collection of related short stories than a novel, Joseph (Jump Up Time) presents slices from the life of Ana Rosa just as she is about to turn 13. Through the heroine's poetry and recollections, readers gain a rare intimate view of life in the Dominican Republic. Ana Rosa dreams of becoming a writer even though no one but the president writes books; she learns to dance the merengue by listening to the rhythms of her beloved ocean; and the love of her older brother, Guario, comforts her through many difficulties. The author's portraits of Ana Rosa and her family are studies in spare language; the chapters often grow out of one central imageAsuch as the gri gri tree where Ana Rosa keeps watch over her village and gets ideas for her writingAgiving the novel the feel of an extended prose poem. The brevity of the chapters showcases Joseph's gift for metaphoric language (e.g., her description of Ana Rosa's first crush: "My dark eyes trailed him like a line of hot soot wherever he went"). When the easy rhythms of the girl's island life abruptly change due to two major events, the author develops these cataclysms so subtly that readers may not feel the impact as fully as other events, such as the heroine's unrequited love. Still, it's a testimony to the power of Joseph's writing that the developments readers will empathize with most are those of greatest importance to her winning heroine. Ages 8-12. (Aug.)

Weaving the rhythms of her culture with her own poetic style, 12-year-old Ana Rosa vividly depicts life on her island homeland. She longs to be a writer, but with no money for paper, she writes on brown bags, napkins, and even in her brother's waiter's notebook. Onto these blank pages, she pours out the heartbreak of her first love, the shock of discovering her beloved Papi is not her real father, and her despair over the government's decision to raze their village. Although self-expression is dangerous in this political climate, Ana Rosa' s mother urges her to follow her heart. Soon after, Ana Rosa is chosen to write a protest to the newspaper in an effort to halt the destruction of their village. Her first taste of celebrity is tinged with heartbreak, as it results in the death of her beloved brother, Guario. Vowing never to write again, Ana Rosa sinks into despair until she realizes that she can use her gift to bring her brother to life again on paper. This is the story of his heroism told through the eyes of an adoring younger sister. The sprinkling of Spanish words throughout adds just the right touch to this richly crafted tale of the triumph of spirit in the face of poverty and oppression.

A Book That Touches A Persons Heart.....

When I first looked for books that might be interesting to read. I would have to admit that at first glance I liked the book, because of its colorful cover, but then I went on to read the reviews and thought it a great idea to buy the book. I believe that it has been the best investment I have made in my life. I didn't like it...I LOVED IT. Its the type of book you hate to put down till your done with it, and the type you can relate to...I was born in the United States but am of Dominican origin and can truely say that this book captures what so many Dominicans have lived through the years. There have been heard times in the Domincan Republic but, but also great times. For there is nothing greater then the way Domincian families just stick together and this book gives a perfect example of how close people are in the Dominican Republic as if everyone was family. The way the author indents the spanish words that seem so familiar to me....and the way she uses quotations makes the book so easy to read. Most of all though its the detail the life experiences she explains in the book, the setting, and the loves shown throughout the book that makes it so great. So great that while reading the book it wrapped me up so much into itself. That I ended up crying not of dissapointment but of how good the book was. On how much I could relate to it from my life experience as a Dominincan girl but also as family experiences. When i suggested it to my friend and cousins they too cried of great joy for the book also wrapped them into its pages its words, but most of all into the life it had captured between the pages. I would recommend this book to anyone...For its the best book I have read so far....So if you haven't read it.....GO and READ IT NOW.....DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS GREAT BOOK....FOR IF YOU DO YOU'LL REGRET IT.

A beautifully written book

Lynn Joseph masters the art of creating rich metaphors. Every page is full of wonderful, evocative images, such as "My mother had walked straight out of herself and left behind a stranger", and "He was the blue moon shimmering in the night sky". Ana Rosa's poems, which begin each chapter, offer an insight to what the chapter holds. The relationships between the characters, especially between Ana Rosa and her older brother Guario, are sweetly and tenderly portrayed. This is a beautifully written book, and one that can be enjoyed by both adolescents and adults.

The one weakness I found with the book was the sub-plot involving the identity of Ana Rosa's father. This seems as if it would be such a transforming revelation that it can't adequately be dealt with in just one chapter, never to be mentioned again. Such an important topic deserves a more in-depth treatment.

Overall, however, The Color of My Words is an excellent book, and highly recommended.

Social Justice Coomes Alive!

This book is a winner in every way. Readers will learn why it is important to stand up for what is right, to band together to fight unjust and unethical situations, and the power of the written word. Ana Rosa is a really neat kid who cares deeply about her family and about social justice. When the chips are down she takes action. I am not from the Dominican Republic (nor is the author, though her husband is and she lives there) and I would be interested to read what a native person thinks of this book. As an American it made me angry to read first hand about the impact of our tourist industry upon cultures that are so poor they can't afford paper to write upon. I was uplifted and inspired by the close family ties and support of this family who were financially impoverished, but enriched beyond belief in human values and compassion. This is one of those books where you can learn something about another culture while at the same time, being entertained by a really good story. I think Lynn Joseph was careful with her words in crafting the story. Ana Rosa was even a bit rebellious and "different," but her family stood behind her. Great book. Great boy characters and girl characters -- all kids who dream to be activists would enjoy this story.

The story of America’s earliest extant play begins with a petty crime—a crime that would have passed largely unnoticed had it not been for one fact: it prompted a beleaguered royal governor of one of Britain’s colonies to lash out at his enemies by writing a biting satire. Androboros, A Bographical [sic] Farce in Three Acts (1715), is universally acknowledged as the first play both written and printed in America. Its significance stems not simply from its publication but from its eventual impact. The play inadvertently laid the foundation for one of the defining rights of the nation that would eventually emerge some seventy-five years later—the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, guaranteeing a free press and freedom of expression.

Androboros was not just the first of its kind, it was also ahead of its time in many ways, preceding the harsh political satires and farces of the later eighteenth century by some fifty years. Such plays served a small but essential role in promoting political thought among the colonists. Written by anonymous authors and passed from hand to hand, these short, crude, and often bawdy plays and dialogues were rarely acted due to their inflammatory lampoonery. Nevertheless, they provided an opportunity for disgruntled colonists to vent their grievances and promote their ideas to fellow citizens. The farces of the late eighteenth century drove home the meaning and message of the American Revolution.

Equally significant is that Androboros may have influenced a few of the key political discourses published in the 1730s, and these works in turn may well have shaped the future of the American political landscape for the next several decades and even into the modern era. But as a closet drama intended only to be read by close friends and political supporters, this play has languished as a minor footnote in American intellectual history. Scholarly research published to date has been, for the most part, inadequate and occasionally inaccurate. This study remedies that oversight, providing a full analysis as well as an annotated typescript and facsimiles of the original printing.

Peter A. Davis is an associate professor of theatre at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he chairs the Theatre Studies program and is director of graduate studies. He specializes in the economic and cultural history of theatre in early America and eighteenth-century England. His articles and reviews have appeared in most of the major theatre history journals. He was also a contributor to the Cambridge History of the American Theatre, winner of the 1999 Barnard Hewitt Award from the American Society for Theatre Research. He is a professional actor and director, and is an ensemble member with the award-winning Remy Bumppo Theatre Company of Chicago. He lives in Chicago, Illinois.
