The Songs of Maldoror (Solar Nocturnal), by Le Comte de Lautramont

Le Comte de Lautréamont was the nom de plume of Isidore Ducasse (1846–70), a Uruguayan-born French writer and poet whose only surviving major work of fiction, Les Chants de Maldoror, was discovered by the Surrealists, who hailed the work as a dark progenitor of their movement. It was in Les Chants de Maldoror that André Breton discovered the phrase that would come to represent the Surrealist doctrine of objective chance: “as beautiful as the random encounter between an umbrella and a sewing-machine upon a dissecting-table.”

Artists inspired by Lautréamont include Man Ray, René Magritte, Max Ernst, André Masson, Joan Miró, Yves Tanguy and, in particular, Salvador Dalí, who in 1933 produced an entire series of illustrations for Les Chants de Maldoror. Twenty of those illustrations are included, for the first time, in this new, definitive edition of Lautréamont’s influential masterpiece. Vividly translated by R. J. Dent—the first new translation for over thirty years—this edition also includes a foreword by French Surrealist poet Paul Eluard and a concise biography of the author by poet Jeremy Reed. In addition, an introduction by series editor Candice Black details the links between Maldoror and the Surrealist movement.

The Songs of Maldoror (Solar Books - Solar Nocturnal)

This is the absolute WORST translation of this book that I have ever read, and I have read many different verions of Maldoror. Contrary to poplular belief, I think that Paul Knight's version is far superior to Alexis Lykiard's interpretation. The only reason to buy the Lykiard version is because it includes extraneous material, but otherwise, Knight's version reads better. As for the R.J. Dent version - it is unpickupable, much less readable. Save your money and do not let your curiosity get the better of you. The translator, in order to avoid being sued by the other translators, really had no choice but to choose the least likely and worst-sounding words for his translated version. I compared all three, and Knight's always sounds the best, then Lykiard's and then R.J. Dent's, respectively. This was just an attempt at pushing out garbage to make money, but the discerning reader would not waste his time or money on it, especially after having been warned!

This historic opus of horrors is dull and boring
By Wistful Angst
This historic opus of horrors is dull and boring, despite the subversive and gruesome subject matter. Admittedly, the S&M scenes ARE still often stomach-turning and blasphemous; however, the author writes in an inventive style of his own which, frankly, puts each scene on the page with such nebulous and confusingly unique grammar that it makes the reading of this 'classic' a chore (originally written in French, there are four English translations - I liked this one best of the two I read). However, although individual sentences often sing with glory, even in translation, and some particular nightmarish descriptions of the narrator's activities have apparently sent generations of readers into ecstatic creative productions of Surreal Art, the only reason for anyone to attempt reading this book would be out of curiosity or for a Literature class. It is strictly a 'History of the Novel' read.

If googled, there is a lot of expert guessing about the author and his purpose in writing this unique book - was it transformed from real events or was it all imagination? The horror stories we see now every day on cable television, with vivid graphic gore commonplace and accessible to us sitting in our living-rooms would only be known to Ducasse either through conversation, pictures, books or having seen or done something similar in real life, in my opinion. I think this book is the work of a juvenile, or perhaps a schizophrenic, mind - intelligent and educated, but juvenile, a young man playing at being a 19th-century male goth; or he was simply unable to control the fantasies and images which may have been assaulting him. I think it is possible the author actually did some of these things (in a manner with no fantasy elements) or saw them done. Heavy use of alcohol-drugs give a schizophrenic or psychotic madness to thoughts and dreams, too. I was sure that the author had to be in bad health when he wrote this; when I read his bio (what there is), apparently it may have been as bad as I guessed - even if he only starved to death from Napoleon's war - but I suspect he was diseased as well. Syphilis, perhaps? In any case, he died at age 24.

From Wikipedia:
""Ducasse was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, to François Ducasse, a French consular officer, and his wife Jacquette-Célestine Davezac. Very little is known about Isidore's childhood, except that he was baptized on 16 November 1847 in the cathedral of Montevideo and that his mother died soon afterwards, probably due to an epidemic. In 1851, as a five-year-old, he experienced the end of the eight-year Siege of Montevideo in the Argentine-Uruguayan War. He was brought up to speak three languages: French, Spanish and English.

In October 1859, at the age of thirteen, he was sent to high school in France by his father. He was trained in French education and technology at the Imperial Lycée in Tarbes. In 1863 he enrolled in the Lycée Louis Barthou in Pau, where he attended classes in rhetoric and philosophy (under and uppergreat). He excelled at arithmetic and drawing and showed extravagance in his thinking and style. Isidore was a reader of Edgar Allan Poe and particularly favored Percy Bysshe Shelley and Byron, as well as Adam Mickiewicz, Milton, Robert Southey, Alfred de Musset and Baudelaire. During school he was fascinated by Racine and Corneille, and by the scene of the blinding in Sophocles' Oedipus the King. According to his schoolmate Paul Lespès, he displayed obvious folly "by self-indulgent use of adjectives and an accumulation of terrible death images" in an essay. After graduation he lived in Tarbes, where he started a friendship with Georges Dazet, the son of his guardian, and decided to become a writer.

After a brief stay with his father in Montevideo, Ducasse settled in Paris at the end of 1867. He began studies at the École Polytechnique, only to abandon them one year later. Continuous allowances from his father made it possible for Ducasse to dedicate himself completely to his writing. He lived in the "Intellectual Quarter", in a hotel in the Rue Notre-Dame-des-Victoires, where he worked intensely on the first canto of Les Chants de Maldoror. It is possible that he started this work before his passage to Montevideo, and also continued the work during his ocean journey.

Ducasse was a frequent visitor to nearby libraries, where he read Romantic literature, as well as scientific works and encyclopaedias. The publisher Léon Genonceaux described him as a "large, dark, young man, beardless, mercurial, neat and industrious", and reported that Ducasse wrote "only at night, sitting at his piano, declaiming wildly while striking the keys, and hammering out ever new verses to the sounds".

In late 1868, Ducasse published (anonymously and at his own expense) the first canto of Les Chants de Maldoror a booklet of thirty-two pages which is considered by many to be a bold, taboo-defying poem concerning pain and cruelty.""

The above information is from the following Wikipedia article: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comte_...

The historical record explains this book enchanted many artists who later read this book. Presto! The Surrealist Movement was born!
The below quote from Wikipedia:

Surrealists revived interest in Isidore Ducasse, known by his pseudonym Comte de Lautréamont, and for the line "beautiful as the chance meeting on a dissecting table of a sewing machine and an umbrella", and Arthur Rimbaud, two late 19th-century writers believed to be the precursors of Surrealism."

Many Literature readers and literary critics of ancient Canon Great Books love these intelligent, talented, drugged-out alcoholic, usually male (millennia of prejudice meant women were often forbidden to read anything but their religious books, if they could read at all) writers of genius whose real lifestyle invariably involves abuse of wives and children and prostitutes, while living in decrepit attics with filth on the floors-walls and insects crawling on them in their stupefied sleep, starving from having spent whatever cash they had on alcohol/drugs. Some of these authors ARE very good, and worthy of being respected as great writers (if not family guys), but others seem to have become totally psychotic and took up a pen while blitzed or having an episode of mental derangement. The world of mostly male Literature experts applaud wildly and buys every copy printed. Is it of value? Reluctantly, I say yes. At worst we females gain insight to the male mind. At best, some really wonderful books are written.

But this isn't one of those.

I think Ducasse appropriated the style of writing from the Revelations book in the Bible, but he wrote from a Lucifer follower's viewpoint, and placed his nightmarish scenes (dreams?) in his contemporary Paris, along with including particularly revolting religious imagery with the idea perhaps of creatively and satirically attempting to toss writing conventions (particularly in the grammar rules which identify the subject, i.e. 'I, you, me, they', so that there is a struggle by the reader to understand which narrator is speaking) and social mores of decency out the window. I understand the intellectual point of this. I can imagine the shock of a 19th century reader. However, for a 21st century reader, this book is a tremendous bore. I think there are lots of satirical transformations of other authors' philosophical writings and stories included (I saw references on the Net from experts who say that Ducasse stole entire sections of material, verbatim, from other books of the time.

I consider Mr. Figgis a visionary filmmaker. In reading this book, he speaks to other filmmakers in the first-person - along with his thoughts and insights. Thought a bit dated, this read is valuable to any emerging filmmaker, if for no other reason than to understand how digital filmmaking came into being. He's very thorough.

Crash Course on Digital Filmmaking with a Cherry on Top
By DirecterGirl08
I graduated from film school so I've read a LOT of books about filmmaking and film production. Mike Figgis provides the best summary of the process of filmmaking I've read. It's short, sweet, and funny. Mike starts with a short history of the digital revolution and then takes you step by flying step through the rigamarole of getting your vision to the big screen. A lot the way he peppers cold hard facts with warm personal stories from his own experiences as camera man, director, and producer. There is a particularly interesting chapter at the end of the book of the importance and art of music in movies. I highly recommend this book for any filmmaker or lay person interested in filmmaking. It is informative, funny, and an easy read.

Solid Encoragement To Get You Off The Couch
By DC Patterson
Got a serious case of brain bloat? Know a ton about film making, but you can't get out of your parent's basement to make something? Mike Figgis has the antidote - an easy to read, informative, and "b.S. free" look at life behind the curtain of the all powerful and terrible feature film business.
Figgis' has made films at both ends of the spectrum, from edgy shorts to studio features with A -list stars - and more models in between than is considered healthy for a well adjusted jazz musician. You don't need to like Mike's films or style to get a lot from this book - but it's a bonus if you like his brand of documentary style raw energy and sound sculpted performance art
Despite tectonic shifts in production resources since 2007 when the book was first published, the thinking in here is timeless. I have read scores of books, and even taught film making in a few places around the world - this book is on a very short 'must read' list.
I hope that given he's still an active filmmaker, that Mr. Figgis will grace us with an updated version, and perhaps a few more war stories from specific works.

Henry David Thoreau - Walden:

Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12th, 1817 on Virginia Road in Concord, Massachusetts. Thoreau studied at Harvard between 1833 and 1837 taking classes in rhetoric, classics, philosophy, mathematics, and science. On graduating the normal professions left him unmoved and, after a period teaching at his own school, a growing friendship with Ralph Waldo Emerson moved his career onto that of writer and observer of nature. Thoreau was a philosopher of nature and how it affected the human condition. He was deeply influenced by Nature and especially the Walden woods. Eventually his published writings were to celebrate this area and his own philosophies. A noted Abolitionist Thoreau was a man to stand by his principles regardless of the minority view he might be holding. Tragically his life and career were short. In 1859, following a late-night excursion to count the rings of tree stumps during a rain storm, he fell ill with bronchitis. His health now fell into an irreversible decline with only short periods of remission. Thoreau spent his last years revising and editing his unpublished works. In the decades that followed he would be regarded as one of America’s greatest writers. Henry David Thoreau died on May 6th, 1862 at the tragically early age of just 44.

Walden
By Brian Flatt
On my short list of all time favorite books, this one is up there at the top. It doesn't attain the #1 spot, but it's up there, definitely top five.

I think it is very interesting to read the reviews and notice that the vast majority of the bad reviews are coming from the young, mainly teenagers who were made to read this in school. The vast majority of the good reviews are coming from the older and the more wizened.

I think the youth of today are just so totally enamored with technology and what's cool and popular. I know I was when I was 17. But then you grow older and hopefully more wise, you live life a little and you no longer care about what's cool or what's popular, you are no longer so enamored with technology and you begin to see how technology is actually killing us. You have some perspective to temper the youthful idealism.

I just loved everything about this book, but I never read it until my 30's. If I had read it in my teens, I probably would have thought it pretty stupid.

I think Thoreau was a genius, both with words and how he lived his life. He did not live on Walden Pond his entire life, by the way. Walden pond was an experiment, not so much a way of life. His time there was meant to show people how superfluous most of our lives are, that it can be simplified, to our soul's benefit, not to mention the benefit of our fellow human beings and the world at large.

He was not a stupid man, he was educated at Harvard. He knew that his way was not the way everyone could or would live. He was not advocating a new social order. He was merely trying to prove a point, that people's lives are way too complicated.

It has been said that Thoreau was the anti-Benjamin Franklin. Realize that even in his day, Thoreau was ridiculed. It is no surprise that he would be ridiculed today, mainly by those who just simply could not live without their iPods.
I read Walden as an ideal and it made me sad. I would love to live my life in the way he did on Walden Pond, but I'm just not so sure how possible it is to live that way in today's world or even how desirable. There has to be a happy medium. You don't have to run out and live as a hermit in order to be able to appreciate Thoreau. There is beauty in the middle way, one can learn to make small changes in their lives, to try and live more simply, as many today are trying to do, to lighten our footprint on this earth, for the betterment of all.

I do believe that people's lives are too complicated, that they can't see the forest for the trees, that their lives are only about making more money so they can buy more things. They have lost their way in the world, they have forgotten, if they even even knew, what life is about.

But running out to live by yourself is not the solution either. I am reminded of the story of Christopher McCandless, whose story was made into the movie Into the Wild. He learned too late that true happiness is not real unless shared. That without love, life is meaningless. And THAT is the reason that living on Walden Pond by yourself is not the answer. We are here on this earth for each other, to love. Without love, life is meaningless.

To live on Walden Pond by yourself for a period of time, to find yourself, or to prove a point, is all well and good, but as a permanent way of life, it's not utopia.

And Thoreau knew this, after his time in the woods, he went back to civilization, but he never lost his soul and he knew how the soul was refreshed... with love, with learning, and with nature.

Missing quotes
By Neil C. Obremski
Besides irritating formatting issues (as Mr. Wiggings mentioned in his review), I got over a quarter way through before realizing that the quotes are missing! I'd see many lines that just seemed to end with half a thought and a comma or double-dash, with nothing to punctuate his statement (price, poem, song, etc.). I just grabbed the MOBI version from Project Gutenberg ([...]) and everything seems to be in order. However be aware that THAT version has no table of contents (DOH!).

So ... it's free, yes, but you're missing out on key elements of the book if you download this.

Wisdom from a Dead White Guy.
By David Purcell
Astonishingly enough feminists and snowflakes could learn something from this book, something called tolerance and perhaps compassion. Thoreau's observations on life and self-reflection are more profound and wiser than all the rant and cant blaring and whining on the media today. His observations on the racial situation concerning the pre- Civil War era are sad and disturbing. Disturbing in that there were slaves in Massachusetts as well in his time. Mainly what one should hopefully glean from this volume is to seek self -knowledge and to come to terms with one's self. Be honest and true to yourself before you dictate to society.

Asian Americans: Achievement Beyond Iq, by James R. Flynn

This authoritative book shows how the gap between a group's mean IQ and achievement can be precisely measured, and then partitioned between two factors -- an important methodology with potential application for all ethnic groups. In this case, the author shows that Chinese Americans' occupational achievements are generally far beyond their IQ -- as if they had a mean IQ 21 points higher than they actually do. This unique approach to explaining group achievement emphasizes non-IQ factors such as historical origins, family, work ethic, educational tradition, personality traits, and social institutions.

Multithreading--dividing an application into multiple independent streams of execution--is a powerful but potentially intimidating programming technique. Multithreading Applications in Win32: The Complete Guide to Threads teaches you how to build multithreaded applications step by step, starting with simple examples and gradually introducing complicating factors and the Win32 APIs you'll need to deal with them. After you've mastered the basic concepts, you'll learn exactly how to implement multithreading applications using C, C++, and MFC, plus specific applications of multithreading on the Win32 platform. The entire book maintains a conversational tone that helps make potentially complex topics understandable.

Essential Reading
By Mark Jones
This book has been essential for writing our multi-threading, commercial apps. The material begins by providing an explanation for why threads are useful, and follows with a thorough explanation of how to synchronise the activities of many threads. Synchronisation is perhaps the biggest obstacle to producing a working multi-threaded app. I found the most useful chapter to be 10: Threads in MFC. This shows how to create worker threads, derived from CWinThread, instead of calling AfxBeginThread(). This allows you to design classes that represent your threads in a more object-oriented way. The book is clearly typeset, with good explanations of both good technique and the common mistakes that can easily be made when starting out. The FAQ section also helped with common problems that turned up.
I recommend a good understanding of C++ to get the most out of this book, though this isn't essential.
In my opinion, this is *the* book for understanding the theory and practice involved in Multithreaded apps for Win 32. Fortunately, I found this book before writing any multi-threaded apps and I cannot recommend it enough!

Good book but as always be weary...
By Andrew
I just started reading the book and the content is presented in a nice, progressive manner building up from the simple to the more complex. I just hope the author's discussions of threading is better than his coding. e.g. The sample code at the end of the second chapter doesn't do a good job of cleaning up - the font created is never destroyed and the bitmap created should be destroyed if printing to the printer. Also, most authors/publishers have an errata page for their books but none can be found for this one so you're left on your own to discover any bugs/typos.

Exemplary
By A Customer
It's old, and the sample code has some flaws, but the text is so damn clear that this book is a must buy. Nothing important is skimped, nothing is confused, nothing is concealed behind excess verbage. Both the Windows threading api and the deeper principles behind designing threaded apps are dealt with more than competently. A star taken away for some buggy sample code, but a star added for wrting clearly about threading, an area that's notoriusly hard to write about or explain well.

Review
"Mike Dooley's Notes from the Universe have charged my day with absolute joy more times than I can remember."

- Rhonda Byrne, creator and executive producer of The Secret

From the Publisher
If ever there was proof of magic in my life, that I now spend part of every day writing for "the Universe", is it. Not even 4 short years ago, after we closed down the last of the TUT stores and liquidated our remaining inventory, I briefly hit the pavement with my accountant's resume in hand.

Fortunately, no one was hiring (at least not me!), and fortunately again, I had enough money from our T-shirt days to coast awhile. Even more fortunately, I still had a thousand or so people looking forward to receiving my "Monday Morning Motivators" via email each week.

So I decided that as long as I didn't have to work, yet, I'd keep doing the one thing that filled me with the greatest sense of accomplishment and purpose - write. And figure out how to make it pay, later.

Talk about scary. As the months rolled by, there were plenty of nights I tossed, literally in a sweat, thinking "what am I doing with my life? How did I get here? What went wrong? What if I don't make any money at this? What if I have to sell my home? What if I can't find a job, and no one will buy my home? What if? What if? What if...?" And day after day, week after week, month after month, my reserves dwindled and nothing came in.

But I knew a trick. I knew that figuring out "the how's", wasn't really my job, it was the Universe's. I also knew to focus on the end result, the kind of life I wanted, and to get busy turning over every stone, knocking on every door, following every impulse, so that theoretically, at least, the Universe could take care of the details.

Whaaaaa! Has it ever!!! Somehow, during all the knocking and turning and visualizing, I acted on enough hunches and instincts to keep me buoyed with the necessary optimism to press on and not look back. And literally, the next thing I knew, the Adventurers Club was born, a variety of speaking opportunities arose, I produced a major audio program that now sells all over the world, and the Universe began using email. Even today, I look around and can hardly believe the reversal and rise of my good fortune.

I always knew it worked, but the thrill of experiencing it yet again, in spite of my worries, doubts, and frustrations, has been an awesome adventure; one I know everyone deserves and can experience for themselves.

I've learned, once again, that no matter how dark things get, no matter how difficult, if I continue to do my part, the Universe has to do its part - it's the law, and things will turn around.

To the life of your dreams,

Mike Dooley

From the Inside Flap
Courageous is the soul who adventures into time and space to learn of their divinity. For while they cannot lose, they can think they have, and the loss will seem intolerable. And while they cannot fail, they can think they have, and the pain will seem unbearable. And while they cannot ever be less than they truly are - powerful, eternal and loved - they can think they are, and all hope will seem lost.

And therein lies their test. A test of perceptions; of what to focus on, of what to believe in, in spite of appearances.

Courageous indeed... the pride of the Universe, and I should know.

Life changing and awe inspiring
By luz malone
I was channel surfing the cm radio in my car and heard a fund raiser where Mike Dooley was being interviewed. I couldn't believe what he was saying. Couldn't believe that what I think about becomes reality I mean I knew that about bad thoughts and feelings but it just never dawned on me that it meant about positive feelings too. So I grabbed m kindle and researched Mike and found "notes from the universe" reading this book opened my eyes and brought me to tears. I had never read these words directed at me before. Honestly this book is helping g to change my life. My life was pretty terrific before except that I was doing work that I really didn't enjoy and my marriage was at a road block and I wasn't physically healthy ( and on and on) but I we managing to fun some bright spots and so I told myself that those were so much more than most people had. After staying up and reading this book and then starting one of his other books it was as though my life changed overnight. Everything felt different the parts of my business I do enjoyed exploded into most of what I do and my husband and I began connecting again and I stArted showing up in my life and for my friends and family and I realize that my thoughts (of more fulfillment, live, health, joy) all those things are my reality. My words don't fully express my gratitude for the gift of Mike Dooley's thoughts that became his words that became his direct gift to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!

!! COOL !!
By RedFoxTotem
I was sitting in the "trading post" in the Garden of the Gods which has always had very special meaning for me as long as I can remember. When I saw this book and started flipping through the pages, I decided "Someone" must have wanted me to see it. I purchased it and it has been so uplifting. I joined the TUT organization so I could receive the daily emails which are along the same lines as the "notes". The Notes from the Universe remind me that I am someone special, as is every single living creature in this universe. It is a huge help to my attitude and much better than reading a daily horror-scope!! Sometimes it seems the message for the day was truly intended just for me. I have forwarded some of the emails notices to my friends who have reacted in the same manner. I also "cheat" a bit and take a note or line from the book to include in a letter when I am writing to a special friend I feel needs a little reminder. It never has failed. These are simple little notes and reminders that make me "remember" I am not a failure and things that may look bad have happened for a reason ... and I usually can look back and think about a situation and realize, no matter how bad it may have seemed at the time, it was a good thing that I experienced it. Mike Dooley must have a special place where he reaches up to grab the latest words for the day. He always comes up with something remarkable.

"You are the reason the sun came up today"(p82)
By Googlie Eyes
Original & cute, fun & (very) personal
Mike Dooley is cool & humble :
"Go on, give it a try. Just open this book to any 'random' page and see what you get".
Basically a daily affirmation book, esoteric/New Age. (I Am)

Good one(p83): "Don't wait for those feelings of excitement, confidence, and expansion that will come when your life suddenly takes off, because your life cannot suddenly take off until you first have those feelings of excitement, confidence, and expectation.
(Heck, if you have to, just pretend. Make believe, fake it. Right now, get up, walk down the hall, smile, wave, wink, pump your fist, and exude all over the place!)"

~ so you see, funny & relational & motivational

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, by Alan Brinkley

"No president since the founders has done more to shape the character of American government," notes Alan Brinkley in this magnificent biography of America's thirty-second president. "And no president since Lincoln has served through darker or more difficult times. Roosevelt thrived in crisis. It brought out his greatness, and his guile. It triggered his almost uncanny ability to communicate effectively with people of all kinds. And at times, it helped him excoriate his enemies, and to revel in doing so."
This brilliant, compact biography chronicles Franklin Delano Roosevelt's rise from a childhood of privilege to a presidency that forever changed the face of international diplomacy, the American party system, and the government's role in global and domestic policy. Brinkley, the National Book Award-winning New Deal historian, provides a clear, concise introduction to Roosevelt's sphinx-like character and remarkable achievements. In a vivid narrative packed with telling anecdotes, the book moves swiftly from Roosevelt's youth in upstate New York--characterized by an aristocratic lifestyle of trips to Europe and private tutoring--to his schooling at Harvard, his brief law career, and his initial entry into politics. From there, Brinkley chronicles Roosevelt's rise to the presidency, a position in which FDR remained until death, through an unparalleled three-plus terms in office. Throughout the book, Brinkley elegantly blends FDR's personal life with his professional one, providing a lens into the President's struggles with polio and his somewhat distant relationship with the first lady.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt led the United States through the worst economic crisis in the nation's history and through the greatest and most terrible war ever recorded. His extraordinary legacy remains alive in our own troubled new century as a reminder of what bravery and strong leadership can accomplish.

From Booklist
A respected New Deal historian seems the ideal person to write what amounts to a first book on FDR. At any rate, Brinkley neither worships nor assails his subject, nor repeats his The End of Reform (1995) to the effect that liberalism changed from favoring free trade and personal liberties to prioritizing escalating consumption and economic growth as FDR responded to the overlapping challenges of depression and world war. He hews closely to the key events of Roosevelt’s life and, especially, administration. He notes Roosevelt’s early development of personal secretiveness and a charming facade to mask emotion and inspire others’ confidence. His tracing of Roosevelt’s presidency attests FDR’s pragmatic and experimental problem-solving approach. While reporting incidents that confirm Roosevelt’s preference for saying one thing and doing another, Brinkley doesn’t accuse him of subterfuge and duplicity, which will incense the legions of FDR detractors almost as much as will Brinkley’s silence about the viciously hardball politics they say FDR played. Let the critics fume. This is a good introduction, not a summary judgment. --Ray Olson

Review

"Alan Brinkley's incisive and eloquent biography of FDR clarifies what he achieved and what he did not. Brinkley brings deep knowledge of Roosevelt and the New Deal to help readers understand why Roosevelt's was arguably the most important presidency of the twentieth century."--Lizabeth Cohen, Bancroft Prize-winning author of Making a New Deal: Industrial Workers in Chicago, 1919-1939

"A perfect gem-like profile of FDR."--Douglas Brinkley, author of The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America and co-author of FDR and the Creation of the U.N.

"Alan Brinkley, the premier historian of the New Deal, has produced the best short biography of the man who led America through one of the most challenging periods in modern history. At a time when analogies between our time and the Great Depression abound, this gracefully written book both informs and delights."--Michael Kazin, author of A Godly Hero: The Life of William Jennings Bryan and Professor of History, Georgetown University

"Alan Brinkley has distilled the complex life and career of this remarkable president down to its essence in a lively and illuminating narrative."--Maury Klein, author of The Power Makers: Steam, Electricity, and the Men Who Invented Modern America

"Big presidents tend to inspire big biographies and FDR is no exception. Noted New Deal scholar Alan Brinkley has bucked the trend with an admirably succinct and readable account that captures the man, his era and his legacies."-- David Reynolds, author of From Munich to Pearl Harbor: Roosevelt's America and the Origins of the Second World War

Splendid and badly-needed concise life and interpretation of FDR
By R. B. Bernstein
This book is not only badly-needed, but it is a splendid concise life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and a thoughtful, shrewd, and learned interpretation of his career by one of America's best historians. The prose is admirably lucid and clear, with occasional elegant turns of phrase. It is never dull (I bought it and read it the same day). And it is remarkably judicious, thoughtful, and even-handed. Brinkley effectively conveys just how experimental, pragmatic, political, and sometimes inconsistent and manipulative Roosevelt was, without traducing the man. All great politicians find themselves drifting or plunging into inconsistency and manipulativeness, and FDR was no exception. Brinkley also deals, concisely yet with sure footing and admirable clarity, with such loaded controversies as whether Roosevelt knew that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was imminent (Brinkley's answer is that he knew that an attack was coming somewhere in the Pacific, but that he had no clue that the target was going to be Pearl Harbor). Brinkley is no idolator of FDR, but he also is honest about his fascination with and ultimate admiration for Roosevelt, and he clinches his case in fewer than 100 pages. Highest recommendation.

Honest and amazingly comprehensive given its length
By Mark Town
Short review called for, I think. The author had a very tough assigment: write an under 100 page study of FDR, one of the giants of American life. Include important aspects of his personal history along with the key political events, and add carefully considered commentary where needed. To succeed Brinkley needed to have deep knowledge of both the man and the times, which he clearly does. And he had to know what could be left out without losing the critical parts of the story. In this short volume a great deal of context is absent and a lot of rich detail is missing. But it is difficult to imagine a better 100 page biography than Brinkley's. Critics from the right will say it is a favorable protrait, and it is - in the main. Brinkley believes we were lucky to have FDR in charge during those challenging times. But FDR's faults are discussed. His deceptions and manipulations are examined, for example, as are the potential psychological sources for same. There is a lot here, but hopefully most readers will use it as a launching point to delve deeper. Certainly this book will give them a sense of why that will be time well spent.

A succinct Roosevelt
By wogan
What a concept; an insightful and mostly inclusive small book. One that does not level down to a reader, but certainly does fight the bigger is better philosophy. In this busy life it is sometimes overwhelming to be faced with a biography that is huge - this book solves that problem. The statements that do create curiosity can be furthered researched and investigated, such as one that states Roosevelt's struggle to recover from his bout of polio made him more self-centered; little if nothing had been said of Roosevelt's self-center ness before in the pages on his earlier life.
Thirty two pages of the 99 are dedicated to Roosevelt's presidential legislation to lift the nation out of the Great Depression; but his early years and his politics before are not forgotten. Brinkley even includes the little said quote of Churchill's, when he heard of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; "So we have won after all".
This is indeed an amazingly complete biography that touches on all the important details of Franklin Roosevelt's life. It is a good buy and would be ideal for someone wishing to have a good overview of the well-regarded politician.
