It was a breath of fresh air to read this incredibly well-organized book, and it is a great starting point for further exploration.

It is clear, concise, and balanced, and is designed to introduce a wide audience to (primarily Christian) theology--methods of study and interpretation--without recommending any specific beliefs. It presents centrist views, and notes differing viewpoints, including some of the author’s.

The book is the first reading in the fourth year of Education for Ministry. For EfMers: what a nice change of pace from MacCulloch!

About the Author

Wayne T. Davis is currently the dean of engineering at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK). He served as associate dean for Research and Technology in the college from 2003 to 2008. He is also a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He earned his AB in physics from Pfeiffer University (1969), MS in physics from Clemson (1971), and MS in environmental engineering and PhD in civil engineering from UTK (1973 and 1975, respectively). He has conducted research and teaching in the area of air quality management and pollution control for more than 42 years at UTK, and is the author/coauthor/editor of numerous research publications including the Air Pollution Control Engineering Manual (published by John Wiley Publishers) and the graduate textbook Air Pollution: Its Origin and Control (published by Elsevier). He has been involved in numerous projects funded by the U.S. EPA, DOE, ORNL, NSF, DOT, and various state agencies and industrial companies, particularly as related to the monitoring and control of sulfur dioxide, ozone/precursors, and particulate matter. He is a recipient of the Lyman Ripperton Outstanding Professor Award presented by the International Air and Waste Management Association (AWMA), where he is a fellow member; he also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Institute of Professional and Environmental Practice (Pittsburgh, PA) in 2007. Dr. Davis served as chair of the Knox County Air Pollution Control Board for more than 22 years and currently serves on the State of Tennessee’s Air Pollution Control Board.

Joshua S. Fu is a professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Tennessee Knoxville (UTK). He was a scientific applications analyst and software engineer at Lockheed Martin/EPA before he moved to UTK in 2000. He earned his BS in environmental engineering from National Cheng Kung University (1986), MS in environmental engineering and water resources from UCLA (1994), and PhD in civil engineering from North Carolina State University (2000). The focus of his research work includes air benefit and attainment assessment, emission estimations, development of emission control strategies, ozone and particulate matter modeling, international air quality modeling assessment, and global climate change effects of air quality. He has taught courses in the area of air quality management and pollution control at UTK, and is the author of numerous research publications and serves as a journal editor for the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association. One of his publications on air quality has been recognized by Elsevier as one of the most cited articles in Atmospheric Environment during 2007 to 2012. He has been a principal investigator and coinvestigator for numerous projects funded by the U.S. EPA, DOE, ORNL, NASA, CDC, DOT, USDA, various state agencies, and industrial companies. He has received numerous research awards from the Chancellor, College of Engineering, and his department at UTK and ORNL. He is also actively involved in the UN ECE Task Force Hemispheric Transport of Air Pollution and Model Intercomparison Study in Asia. About the Author
FLORIN LOWNDES was born in Romania in 1938 and graduated from the Institute for Fine Arts in Bukarest. After escaping the Communist regime there and moving to the United States, he became known internationally for his architecture-related art. Since moving to Germany, he has become known as a free thinker, writer, and lecturer. He has taught college-level courses and in Waldorf schools and has studied anthroposophy since 1971. Mr. Lowndes has written for numerous journals and, with George and Gisela O'Neil, coauthored The Human Life. He founded the Center of Heart-Thinking in Boston and leads training seminars in the U.S. and Europe.

A must for anthroposophical inner work, with caveat

Florin Lowndes clearly has travelled the inner path laid out by Rudolf Steiner sincerely and for many years.

The six "subsidiary" exercises described by Rudolf Steiner, and elaborated in this work by Lowndes, ENLIVENING THE CHAKRA OF THE HEART (ETCOTH), are to be considered absolutely essential, a safety measure, without which no other exercises or meditations should be practiced. All meditations and spiritual exercises can open one to undesirable influences, or have undesirable effects, and these 6 exercises are meant to stabilize and strengthen the etheric and astral bodies against this possibility. The use of the description "subsidiary" by Steiner himself has led many to wrongly believe that these 6 exercises are supplementary, or secondary, in importance. Not true. Steiner himself is clear on this issue, that other exercises or meditations must not be commenced without the simultaneous practice and protective benefit of these foundational exercises.

These six exercises are as follows (very brief and incomplete description):

1. Control of thinking by concentration one's thoughts on a particular object
2. Control of will by choosing an activity to repeat at a given time
3. Control of feelings by developing equanity towards joy and sorrow
4. Development of positivity
5. Development of open-mindedness
6. Harmonizing all the foregoing

Lowndes elaborates on these practices in a very useful and pedagogical way. My only caveat is that, in ETCOTH, Lowndes overlays his own experience (and therefore, interpretation) on this work, and one should really read how R. Steiner himself describes these exercises (quoted extensively in Lowndes' text, also to be found in Guidance in Esoteric Training, and Outline of Esoteric Science). If any fault could be found with Lowndes' work here, it is only that his way of working some of these exercises seems to me more ponderous and difficult than Steiner himself described them. Still, I consider ETCOTH by Lowndes to be absolutely essential to anyone sincerely engaged in anthroposophical inner work, and, in my view represents a solid pedagogy and systematization which is less developed in Steiner's own presentation of anthroposophy.

Steiner's kundalini

This is a relatively interesting book about kundalini and chakras, written from an Anthroposophical (read: unusual) perspective. The work is published by a subsidiary to Rudolf Steiner Press. Yet, it's unclear if it reflects the “official” position of the Anthroposophists. To some extent, the book seems to be based on independent research by the author, Florin Lowndes.

Lowndes argues that Steiner had two parallel teachings. The exoteric teaching was a reformed version of traditional Western esotericism. The esoteric teaching was a direct path to “heart-thinking”, based on Steiner's book “The Philosophy of Freedom”. Perhaps inevitably, it's very difficult to grasp what the esoteric message might be, except that it somehow entails the notion that thinking should reflect upon itself, thereby transforming itself into a purely spiritual force. Most of Lowndes' book deals with the first path, the “exoteric” one.

Lowndes argues that the traditional chakras enumerated by various Eastern traditions and Theosophy are solely based in the etheric body (the lowest purely supersensible body). The forthcoming task of human evolution is to develop new chakras based in the astral body (which is higher than the etheric body). In traditional teachings, the kundalini was awakened in the human body and ascended until it reached a point immediately above the head, exploding and inducing ecstatic experiences. In Steiner's version, the kundalini descends from a supersensible sphere down into the astral body, where it creates or enlivens new chakras. The end-result is said to be clear, systematic, level-headed thinking (rather than ecstasy), but also a supersensible ability to “read” other people's souls and soul states. The most important effect of the descending kundalini is to develop the heart chakra (called “the twelve-petalled lotus” by Steiner), which will start to vibrate and radiate in all colours of the spectrum. Humans will be able to communicate through the heart-chakra. Lowndes believes that it will take many more incarnations before humanity in general reaches this new level of development. To sum up this far, the author believes that the descending kundalini can be tapped by humans to aid their spiritual evolution. (Parallels to Sri Aurobindo are pretty obvious here.)

“Enlivening the Chakra of the Heart” contains six exercises to develop the heart chakra. They are not particularly dramatic, and include exercises in meditation, open-mindedness, equanimity, etc. The author proposes different body postures (the Agrippa positions) to harness etheric energy, positions apparently also used in eurythmy (a kind of performance art developed by Steiner and Marie von Sivers). The exercises are said to protect the practitioner from the evil forces of Lucifer, Ahriman and the Asuras, while gaining the protection of angelic hierarchies. Lowndes believes that the evolution of the heart chakra is *the* most important task of humanity today, and that the six exercises described in his book therefore aren't optional, but rather imperative for our future…

I admit that “Enlivening the chakra of the heart” is a relatively interesting book, although perhaps too narrow for general readers. I found the book by chance when typing the words “Steiner kundalini” into the Amazon search engine. I will give it four stars for stimulating my thinking, although perhaps not my chakras! ;-)

Exercises or History?

This was a book that tried to present more information than the title leads you to believe it contains. It is more of a history of Rudolf Steiner than the actual exercises. It explains the backgrounds for them more than how they might be of use in personal practice. It is based on the workshops this author presented for his students as followers of mystery school theory.

I used this book as a tool for historical knowledge rather than attempting to actually do the exercises, though I can see and know why they are of importance to personal philosophical change and growth. It is very esoteric in its scope and is a testament to the on-going influence of Dr. Steiner's life and practices. The details of the actual exercises are concise and pictured clearly. I would recommend to book as a reference book and also as a personal guide to practicing ancient spiritual evolution. It clarifies in a physical way how what is thought, felt and performed affects you and those around you.

Wheel: Triumphant

This nice compilation stands as testament to architectural elegance, engineering ingenuity, perseverance and the triumph of two good people filled with passion and creativity. The London Eye started from the brilliant minds of architects (and husband and wife) David Marks and Julia Barfield. In time, "more than 2,000 other people were involved in the Eye's creation." This book takes you from two to 2,000. Like the Eye itself, it's a heck of a ride.

It's standard now to be a great fan of the Eye. But the book skillfully catalogs a different time: that of the beginnings when skepticism and, in some cases, outright hostility threatened to kill the idea in its infancy. It took a couple of well-placed supporters in the press (writer Mira Bar-Hillel and editor Stewart Steven of the Evening Standard) and business (CEO Bob Ayling of British Airways) to make the idea fly.

Still, there was a time when all the smart money and the bandwagon was lined up behind the lamentable Millennium Dome. The difference between the two: behind the Eye was, according to Bob Ayling, "a team that was committed to achieving something...and if something needed to be done we got it done. We took decisions very quickly and we put the financial structure in place to make it succeed. The Dome, on the other hand, was a political project that become a politicised project." In short, doomed for failure.

By the time of the Eye's assembling in the Thames and its hoisting - a technical feat of majesty and a signature event in itself - the world had top-sided. It was Wheel: triumphant. Its outline has become "shorthand for London." The Dome has met a much different history.

Beyond the story the book tells, it's a wonderful picture book. It mixes high-quality color and black & white plates with original sketches and reprints of significant London front pages capturing key events,

A great book for anyone with a serious interest in the Eye

This is not a book for the casual reader, or as just a souvenir of a visit to the London Eye. This is an in-depth book (TRULY in-depth) that takes you right through all the history, planning, engineering, construction, roadblocks, and eventual realization of this London icon. Photos are just fantastic. You'd have to be a true fan of the Eye (or an engineer or someone in construction) to really read this book from cover to cover. For the rest of us, the book is worth the price for the pictures alone.

It tells the whole story of the eye from the spark that created the idea, through the benchmarks and tribulations, to the sureal reflection on how it could have gone differently. Really helps to understand what is happening when I watch a game

One of best soccer books I have read as really added to my understanding of the games I watch.....

For example, I can now appreciate the pressing game of Bayern and Dortmund, and the German demolition of Brazil in the World Cup semi final which I watched with greater appreciation after reading analysis in this book

I particularly found the analysis of the changing skill sets required position by position illuminating together with the passing of the off-side trap.

All this plus an entertain style and humorous insights not least was the discussion of what motivates Suarez to bite.

Decent book, better than the authors second book but not as good as his first book. I would say about 75% of book is a good read, the other 25% seemed no better than if you were sitting in a bar and you were getting and earful from some tipsy passionate football fan rambling on about whatever it is he talking about

I am embarassed to admit this: I am a closet Richard Simmons fan. Yes, he's a little corny, a little cheesy, a little over the top sometimes but having said that: I love the man. What a bright and shining light of inspiration he is to people without hope or direction.

I originally dubbed the audio version of this book on tape from the library over 10 years ago. I still listen to it. I decided that I would like to own the actual book version because I enjoyed the tapes so much.

This book is filled with short, easy-to-read-in-a-couple-of-minutes stories of inspiration, and practical tips for changing one's lifestyle.

I don't have a weight problem but I am inspired to make healthy choices in my life because of this book. I highly recommend it.

Be careful what catches your attention... You never know what happens next.

Brett’s relationship with Myserra has gone a little bit off the rails of late. Myserra is not spending as much time with Brett as she used to which Brett finds hard to take, at one point being rather short with Myserra and when she leaves him alone for some time, he finds that things just become worse. A mysterious bracelet catches his attention and Brett discovers that when a Succubus leaves something out in the open, it can change things in ways one would never expect.

Myserra and Ashley do not appear for very long in this work, as it is really focused on Brett alone. It is clear that Myserra has something in mind for Brett, the comment she makes at the beginning of the story makes that very clear, and the means to make that happen is both cute and wonderfully told. They do, of course, appear by the end of the story again, to make sure that Brett, or rather Brooke, gets everything out of her lesson, and the twist in the ending is a neat little one that I didn’t see coming earlier in the work.

Brett’s transformation into “Bimbo Brooke” is told in a way that makes it very subtle and by the time that Brett realizes that something is happening to him, it’s far too late to do anything about it. Not that he could at any rate as Myserra’s trap for her submissive works really quite well. The Brooke that has been seen before isn’t the Brooke that appears in this work. She’s very much a bimbo, but there is also something a bit different about her. She does try to fight her transformation, attempts to control herself as much as she can, but over time she falls further and further into Myserra’s trap. When it finally closes completely, Brooke is a cute little sex toy that has quite the experience with her Mistress and her new found friend in the story.
I liked the mental shifting of Brett to Brooke and then how Brooke turned the corner into being the best bimbo she could possibly be. The shifts in attitude and character build up slowly over time and to Brett and Brooke’s point of view, when they do shift, it’s fairly seamless and not noticed too much by him/herself.

There are two very hot scenes in the work, one that introduces a new character to the series which I thought was lovely, and the other when Myserra and Ashley return that takes Brooke into being completely bimbo in nature and finding out what that means in some very hot ways. Two really well told hot flashes, but the mind control and body transformations are really the core of the story and as such they make the work very strong as a whole.
The author knows his characters and how they act, what they do, and more importantly, how things come to the climax aren’t out of place. I would have liked to see a bit more of Bimbo Brett getting into some “situations”, more than she did. I think I would like to see her return again sometime, perhaps Brett will see this side of him/herself as being a treat in more ways than one.

Certainly Brett will have learned not to touch things that he doesn’t recognize. Succubi have all sorts of things to play with… or to play with others you know…

Just a wonderfully fun work that just made me smile throughout. It was wonderful to see Brett, through Brooke, be something different than she usually is. It gives a different perspective on things, what could have been, what might have been, and what could, possibly, return again some time. A lovely light, joyful, and cute story that I really did enjoy…

This session was done flawlessly and kept me interested. layers of both myserra and brett's relationship keep evolving and get more intricate. Also with a great twist at the end, I can't wait until the next session.
