A surprisingly crisp, informative, and lovely catalogue

For those expecting to receive a high quality catalogue of the British Museum's Rosetta Stone exhibition, you will not be disappointed. But as an added bonus, the essays are not pedantic and dull, but eloquent and informative. They detail not only the finding of the stone and its impact on Egyptology, but also include chapters on the development of the Ancient Egyptian language, the scripts, tools used to write, and the ways in which these reflect the Egyptian world view.
Richard Parkinson's writing style makes this a joy to read! I would recommend it not only to those interested in the exhibit (the photos are of excellent quality), but those interested in Ancient Egyptian language and Egypt in general.

most informative book ever published on the Rosetta Stone

This book was written as an accompanying extract to a British Museum exhibit celebrating the bicentenary of its discovery, and accurately presents the important Rosetta Stone. This is achieved by means of outlining the Stone's history, controversy around its discovery and its deciphering which gave the key to understanding the hieroglyphs. Using this as his starting point, the author continues to explore the role, power and importance of writing in Ancient Egypt as well as its many aspects (such as scribes and the tools used) and its relation to art. Other decipherments (Linear B and Meroitic) are also considered in this book. Readable, enjoyable and very informative, accompanied by black & white illustrations, it is recommended for anyone interested in the Ancient Egyptian language.

Another Winner by Feinstein

I rarely give 5 start ratings and the one's I give are usually for outstanding examples of Historical research. Feinstein has once again done a masterful job of describing his subjects. His focus is AAA baseball, one (big) step below the majors. We see players with years in the majors trying to get one more shot and minor league "lifers" trying for a taste before they retire. We also hear from managers, umpires and even league executives. Fienstein is such a smooth writer he gives the reader a wealth of hard data and personal insights while making it all look easy. The book is facinating from beginning to end. Remember everyone there is a phone call from thje big time or a phone call away from being released or sent down a level. The tension is built into every player's life. Even if you aren't a big baseball fan you might like the book as a study of how men react under pressure and deal with success but mostly failure. Buy the book.

So close

Triple A baseball serves a lot of functions: training for young players to ready them for the majors; warehouse for a few extra guys who might make a difference at the end of the season; place for struggling players to rehab themselves and get a chance at the bigs; place for players who can't make the show but love the game too much to stop; entertainment for fans in second-string cities. Managers and umpires also get trained, warehoused, and disappointed in Triple A ball - and managers have a tough job because they never know from one day to the next who will be part of their squads.

Still, these players are better than all but a few hundred other people at playing professional ball.

John Feinstein spent a long season following a few players at different points in theire baseball trajectories, along with a few managers and an umpire. A lot of the stories are similar, with ups and downs and some happy and some less happy conclusions. The book is clearly pasted together from essays and articles, so there is repetition and overlap. Some of the through-lines are hard to follow as we jump around.

I would have liked more general information about Triple A life and a bit less about individual trajectories. But that's not the book Feinstein wrote. What he produced does give a good flavor of Triple A life and how guys get to the majors...or don't.

Not Feinstein's best, but his not-best is still worth a read.

enjoyable and educational read

I grew up in Chicago and attended occasional Cubs games (Comiskey Park was no place for a father to take his daughter). In my thirties, I lived in Baltimore, and went to many ball games during a glorious era for the Orioles at Memorial Stadium, with Cal Ripkin,Jr., Jim Palmer, and my favorite, catcher Rick Dempsey. I also played Rotisserie (fantasy) baseball in the early days of USAStats, the owner of which was a co-worker at my law office. But, until reading Feinstein's book, I knew little about the minor leagues, and gave them little thought. So, I thoroughly enjoyed this book which is the chronicle of a year in Triple A ball, following the (literal) ups and downs of the player, managers, and umps who live in, or frequently pass through, the top minor league teams. I learned a lot about the role that MLB plays in overseeing what goes on in Triple A, and how the players there must be willing to change plans on a dime, because they can be playing in Allentown one minute, and on a plane to the Show the next, and back in Allentown hours or days later. Triple A is full of ambition, disappointment and heartbreak, and no one ever fully understands why certain players get called up and others rarely, or never, do. I loved this book, and will watch spring training and the upcoming baseball season with more attention to the movement of players to and from the majors, and more empathy for what they experience when coming up and going back down. I thank John Feinstein for this book. It has deepened my understanding of and appreciation for America's game considerably. Highly recommend for those who love the game and would like to learn more about what goes into making a major league player.

About the Author

Harper Fox gets to spend every day doing what she loves best—creating worlds and stories for the huge cast of lovely gay men queuing up inside her head. She lives in rural northern England and does most of her writing at an old kitchen table in her back garden, often with blanket and hot water bottle. When not writing, she either despairs or bakes bread, specialities foccacia and her amazing seven-strand challah. If she has any other skills, she's yet to discover them. The Salisbury Key is her fifth published title.

A wonderfully written, emotionally powerful book.

I just finished The Salisbury Key by Brit m/m romance author Harper Fox. I've already emailed her with embarassing OCD efficiency. I may have gushed a little. But in a manly, intellectual way.

Life After Joe, the other book of Fox's that I read and loved, is similar in that it's about a very intense relationship that develops between two men after one of them suffers a loss--gradually revealing that the other one has also suffered. It's a fairly simple romantic structure, but The Salisbury Key adds onto that a compelling cloak-and-dagger plot that is only allowed to surface little at a time--creating a series of surprises toward the later part of the book that had my heart pounding.

Fox is a really superb writer. Elegant, classy, beautifully descriptive of the geographic region in the title--where Stonehenge sits shrouded in mystery on the Salisbury Plain. Her writing is also beautifully descriptive of the emotional journey of Daniel Logan and Lt. Rayne (I won't even give his first name--because that is one of the several delicious small surprises that pop out of the book, giving the reader added pleasure).

I don't usually focus on the sex in talking about my beloved romances: but I have to point out that I've never read more beautifully written examples than in Fox's books. They're explicit without, somehow, being graphic. What they manage to do is illuminate the passion behind the action. I can't quite describe it, but they are as integral to our understanding the story and the characters as any of the plot twists.

As addicted as I am to m/m romance novels, I have a single regret: that because of their very intentional and specific gay/erotic nature, they are automatically off limits for a great many people who would enjoy Fox's writing. But I guess those people have straight romances to read. Fine for them.

What I love about Harper Fox's work is that it has an unashamed almost poetic distillation of intensity.

Her books are dramatic to the tipping off point of melodrama, bleed romance into eroticism and are full of throat closing angst. And yet somehow they have a wonderful reality, this comes from the light touch within her writing which creates original,appealing characters.The sense of place the book's strong locations achieve,anchor the fast moving action.

The Salisbury Key joins A Midwinter Prince as my favourite from her excellent collection of work.

The Salisbury Key

Before buying most of my books these days, I always take a look at the reviews and then get a sample to read on my kindle. Reviews are of course highly subjective and you never know what is motivating any one reviewer, positive or negative or if maybe their taste is simply different than yours. Regardless, because I know the type of book I like, I put off looking at this book for a long time, before actually trying it. As soon as I started reading the sample, I couldn't believe I had not checked it out sooner. I thought this book was wonderful. A complex storyline with a solid mystery, charismatic characters who drew me in, and even a touch of the arcane. I like a good love story, and part of why I never looked too closely here was that several reviews mentioned the romance not being a strong point. I found that I completely disagree. There were not one, but two beautiful stories of love here for the main character. One of love lost, but another of love found. The author wrote them in such a way, that both relationships were incredibly strong and legitimate, and yet so completely different from one another that there was no competition or detraction from either relationship if compared to the other. In my experience that is a rare thing. This book is a keeper, and I highly recommend it.

Not clear all the time

The first problem I noticed with this book was that there were typographical errors. I found two in the first chapter alone, and one of them was a misspelling of "Archaea". In a textbook, there definitely shouldn't be mistakes in the spelling of words related the the subject matter. In addition, I've seen mistakes in the concept problems at the end of some of the chapter.

I found most of the diagrams to be clear, but my professor often supplemented them by bringing in examples from other books that he claimed were better. Sometimes diagrams referenced in the text would be on the following page, so I would be flipping pages back and forth to look at the diagrams and the text.

The biggest upside to this book was the price. I paid just over $50 to buy it new and it came with access to online resources. At the time I am writing this review, the price for a new copy on Amazon is more than $110. I would not recommend buying this if it isn't required for a class. I think there are many other genetics textbooks out there that are better that you could get for a similar price.

Well written biology textbook. I needed this text for an undergraduate biology course and I was happy with how quickly it shipped and the quality of the textbook. It is easy to read and the photos are helpful in explaining the material. Highly recommend this version. My course required a more updated version, but this one suited my needs just fine.

A great textbook for heritage learners of Arabic in the Quran

This is an excellent book for a very specific audience: Muslims who have grown up hearing or memorizing Quranic verses, but want to understand more. This textbook is not intended to make students grammarians, conversant in Arabic, or even able to read classical Arabic in general. The book is very effective and strategically designed to achieve its stated objectives: to understand the Arabic of the Quran. No pronunciation practice. No writing, speaking, or listening comprehension. Strictly understanding the vocabulary and the grammar as it occurs in the corpus of the Quran.
Younes takes an inductive approach starting with the shorter chapters, meaning the student learns about the vocabulary and the grammar as s/he encounters it in the Quran. For this reason, I do not recommend this book for students with no background with the Quran. I strongly recommend it for the student who wants a regular but regimented study of the Arabic in the Quran as she uses it in the performance of her prayers, or when she reads the Quran without the aid of a dictionary or translation.
Dr. Younes is a well-known linguist and an inveterate Arabic professor who has written textbooks also for more communicative or integrative approaches. I recommend students interested in that approach look at his other textbooks.

Not sure whom this book will help

I am quite comfortable with Quranic Grammar, my ultimate goal is to be able to understand Quran when it is recited without looking into Mushaf(Quran).
this book just gives you breakdown words into Noun,Verb and particle and ask you to memmorize its meaning, if you do that after few weeks one will not be able to remember them.
as almost all of arabic words are derived from 3 root letters, it should provide base letters, than which verb form is used, and if there are any words from Haroofe Illa(t), (alif, wow and yaa, which will change the way normal conjugation is done) only than one probably be able to remember than better.
I will not recommend this book for home study.
